About me
I am a Lecturer in English Language and Communication, working with students and colleagues to develop Academic Literacy in English. I am responsible for courses on Technical Communication, Introduction to English for Academic Studies (online), Introduction to Scientific Writing (doctoral course in EECS), and Writing Scientific Articles (university-wide doctoral course). I also co-ordinate the Pre-sessional English for Master's Students course. In addition, I work with individual students in the Centre for Academic Writing (CAS).
I am interested in the art of scientific knowledge communication, particularly writing. I explore how academic writing is constructed and valued in universities through an Academic Literacies framework. I believe that only through developing a sound understanding and appreciation of the very human writing process and practice can we hope to navigate writing technologies in a way that truly benefits education and society (explored in my Times Higher Education article here).
I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK, and a Senior Fellow, Mentor and Assessor of BALEAP, the global forum for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) professionals.
I have for many years been involved with the charity CARA, and have been privileged to work closely with a Syrian refugee in Jordan, a clinical psychologist. This continues to be a productive, educational and joyful collaboration.
I have written and co-written textbooks on academic writing and study skills for university students in science and technology, nursing, social work, education and policing. I am currently series editor for the Routledge Critical Studies series. I have also contributed as a lexicographer on Cambridge Dictionaries.
In 2021, colleagues and I in Language and Communication launched The KTH Guide to scientific writing. We continue to evaluate and develop the guide so that it meets the needs of the whole KTH scientific writing community.
