The course English for Employment enhances your ability to communicate effectively and professionally in English in the international workplace, for instance in emails and in online meetings. The course also gives you skills to describe your background, interests and experience in a clear, professional and attention-catching manner in the job-seeking process.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims for students to acquire advanced English for working life and the necessary skills to communicate clearly and appropriately in professional contexts.

​The course covers:

  • advanced English for professional communication in speech and writing: style, text structure, grammar, and vocabulary

  • genres and conventions in professional contexts

  • some common text types in the job-seeking process for engineers, such as CV, cover letter and pitch

  • topics concerning communication in international workplaces, such as cultural and linguistic diversity, inclusive language, accessibility, and English as a lingua franca.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. identify and analyse various types of communication in English-speaking professional contexts, with a particular focus on the features of formal and technical communication, and intercultural communication

  2. adapt language to audience and purpose, and explain and justify their choices, in different types of work-related communication in English, including in digital channels.

  3. write clear and effective texts with technical content in English

  4. with particular focus on the job-seeking process, describe their academic background, professional experience, strengths, values and future plans, and attract the audience’s interest

  5. apply elementary negotiation techniques in order to effectively reach consensus in negotiations and other meetings.

Specific prerequisites

Documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Examination

  • INL2 - Hand in assignment, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • SEM2 - Seminar, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
