Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course aims to help participants develop their subject-specific knowledge by adapting their technical communication to different genres, audiences and purposes. Course participants work individually and in groups, focusing on clear, concise and precise English. They work with key principles within science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), such as sustainability and inclusion. Course participants receive training and personalised feedback on:​

-​​advanced scientific English: text structure, sentence construction, academic style, vocabulary and reference management

-​language and discourse analysis

​-peer review, reflection and self-assessment

-​technical genres (e.g. instructions, proposals, presentations)​

Intended learning outcomes


After passing the course, the students should be able to:

  1. ​​create texts with technical content, adapt them to different audiences and purposes, and present the texts orally and in writing. 
  2. ​identify and apply principles and conventions of scientific discourse. 
  3. ​analyse and evaluate the writing process and assess the role of AI tools in this process. 
  4. ​explain technical concepts in English and participate in discussions on various technical topics.​

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

Documented knowledge in a STEM discipline, with a minimum of 90 ECTS, and English proficiency equivalent to B2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Examination

  • INL2 - Hand in assignment, 4.5 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
  • SEM2 - Seminar, 3.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
