LT1019 Gender Perspectives in Technology and Science - Education for secondary school grade 7-9 4.0 credits

The course highlights gender perspective on technology and science education and the importance for students' identity formation for grades 7-9. The course embraces the historical development on technology and the natural sciences as well as elementary gender theocy. A major task in the course is to develop a teaching sequence for students in grades 7-9 in technology or science with a gender perspective.

Course contents

In the course is included

  • Basic gender research theories of how sex/gender is designed through norms and values in society. 
  • Gender perspective on the technology and natural sciences historical development and norms and values that are associated with the subjects.
  •  Identity creation of pupils in technology and natural sciences. 
  • Gender studies, technology, natural sciences and teaching for years 7-9 are interdisciplinarily joined in discussions and in development of a teaching component.

Intended learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

  •  Give an account of basic gender research theories relevant for teaching of technology and natural sciences.
  • Give an account of which importance gender have had and have for the historical development of the technology and the natural sciences.
  • Reflect on and discuss knowledge and ideas of gender in relation to technology and natural sciences.
  • Prepare and report an interdisciplinary teaching component that contains technology/science and gender.
