The course covers the Swedish school system, its development, conditions, governance and relevant governing documents. It also covers the development of the roles of teachers and pupils, and the role of schools in relation to education, democracy and upbringing. The course also covers the democratic values of schools, which include respect for fellow human beings and human rights. It also examines how sociological aspects affect education and schools.

Intended learning outcomes
After completing the course, students should be able to:
1 describe the development of the Swedish school system
describe the school's mission in terms of education and upbringing in 2 relation to democratic values, the Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and reflect on its practical consequences today
3 describe the principles of school governance and analyse how political governance of schools relates to the practical everyday work of teachers
4 describe the systematic quality assurance work carried out by schools
5 discuss how the education system is affected by societal aspects

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
