ME2305 Management: Traditions, Theory and Trends 6.0 credits

The course is based on a series of lectures, some of them introduce concepts and theories for understanding management knowledge, its development and its consumption from different points of view, others introduce recent management issues. The students are supposed to have a general knowledge of management in a number of areas, and the issue presented will develop further such knowledge by going deeper into the latest developments and by also offering occasion for reflection. In order to provide an occasion for discussion and reflection, seminars and own work will complete the lectures.

After the course, the student should: 

• have developed awareness for the context in which ideas and theories of management develop and have understood the historical dimension of the development of management knowledge, which has been at times heavily influenced by engineers
• have gained deeper understanding of management knowledge, which will allow the student to be able to more reflectively use and interpret management models  
• demonstrate knowledge of recent management issues faced by contemporary organisations, some of them related to technical issues and/or an approach to management shaped by the engineering tradition
• demonstrate the capacity to critically analyse management knowledge and in particular to critically reflect on recent management issues
• be able to understand international literature on these subjects and to not only refer their content, but also to express his/her own thoughts on the matter using the proper English terminology.

In particular, on a general level, what the student will be required to demonstrate is to be able to relate to management theories and models in a reflective way. This includes: 

• being able to describe how management knowledge is developed, distributed, consumed 
• being able to describe how management knowledge can be analysed, used, interpreted
• being able to correctly describe the presented management issues, recent developments of normative theories and models, but also their critical aspects and consequences

On a more detailed level, each student will be required demonstrate to be able to autonomously reflect on and discuss management knowledge by referring to the theoretical contributions introduced in the course and combining them in an original piece of work.

30 hp courses at KTH-Indek or equal including ME2302/4D1113 Knowledge Formation in Technology and Natural Science. That curse have to be finished and passed, or equally courses.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
• In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
• In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
