Prof. Martin Månsson is an experimental materials physicist working at the Quantum Light and Matter Physics (Q-LaMP) research unit, within the Department of Applied Physics at KTH Royal Institute of Technology. His research focuses on sustainable materials and quantum materials, with the overall aim of understanding and developing materials that can contribute to a more energy-efficient and sustainable society.

A central part of his work concerns novel quantum matter, where unusual magnetic, electronic, and superconducting properties emerge from the laws of quantum mechanics. These materials are important not only for fundamental science, but also for future information and communication technologies, where new materials concepts may enable both improved computing power and reduced energy consumption. By studying how atoms, electrons, and magnetic moments behave inside complex materials, his research seeks to uncover mechanisms that can support the development of new low-energy technologies.

His research programme also addresses materials for sustainable energy harvesting and storage, including batteries, hydrogen-storage materials, and photovoltaics. Across these areas, he uses advanced experimental methods at large-scale research facilities, such as neutron scattering, muon spin spectroscopy, synchrotron radiation, and laser-based spectroscopy, to probe structure, dynamics, magnetism, ion diffusion, and electronic properties.

At KTH, Prof. Månsson connects fundamental materials physics with long-term sustainability challenges. He is an internationally recognized and well-established profile in the large-scale facilities community, with extensive networks across leading neutron, muon, and synchrotron facilities. Through his research and strategic roles in SwedNess, the Swedish graduate school for neutron and X-ray scattering, and KTH-RELAX, he contributes to advancing large-scale facility research, education, and infrastructure, while fostering international collaborations at KTH.
