THS – Student Union at KTH

As an international student, you can be sure THS, the student union here at KTH, will have a big impact on your social life. So what is this group is and what do they do?

Well, of the many things I’ve been involved with in the past year in KTH, THS has been hosting, helping or supporting almost all of them. They work to make student life better at KTH – that means social life, education, career prospects and student welfare.  They have been working hard to keep things going over the pandemic period, and now they are back in full swing, hosting parties and events galore. Soon they will hold a Jubilee celebration to mark their 120th year at KTH.

International Reception

The first time most students meet THS is at the reception events at the start of each semester. THS organises a large three-week long International Reception to welcome students every year. This is your first chance to get to know your new classmates, to try out the clubs and societies around the university and to get to know Stockholm too.

Nymble, the Student Centre at KTH

Nymble

Although it’s always a little hard for newcomers to pronounce (try to stress the “e”), Nymble is an important place to know at KTH. It’s the heart of THS. Here you’ll not only find the THS offices, but also the restaurant & café, study rooms, meeting rooms, a book shop and although I’ve never seen it, I’ve heard there’s a sauna here for students to use. As a member of THS you get discounts at the restaurant and café.

The associations can all use Nymble for their events and sometimes, for the biggest and best events, the Nymble building is taken over completely. This happens for career fairs, such as THS Armada, and or large parties like Tentapub.

Associations

THS holds a Union Day each semester so that new students can get to know the different associations active around KTH. The many associations range from swimming to choir to chess and many besides. One association that’s particularly great for international students to know is THS MAIN, whose aim is to make life great for those of us who have newly arrive into Stockholm. MAIN hold many social events throughout the year, and lots of students get involved, volunteering or organising these events too. Through these THS associations you may even reach the magical party cabin far out in the Stockholm archipelago called Osqvik.

Each programme has a Chapter too, sort of like a social group just for the study in that programme. Each chapter has their own pubs, events and traditions passed down the years. As I’m in the A (Architecture) Chapter, last year I had the chance to meet up for pub nights with fellow architecture in the chapter pub each Friday night.

One thing is for sure, with the help of THS, you’re social life as a KTH is in good hands.
