This project aims to enhance climate action in urban spatial planning by extending an AI-powered Decision Support System (AI-DSS) developed in the Smart Built Environment project “AI-powered Knowledge Integration to C arbon-Neutral C ities.” The extended AI-DSS will integrate nature- based solutions (NbS), leverage advancements in AI, and develop a framework to facilitate climate action planning, particularly in smaller and resource-poor cities. By testing the tool in both Stockholm, a global sustainability leader, and Trelleborg, a small city undergoing significant urban transformation, the project will evaluate the effectiveness of AI-driven spatial planning for missions reduction. The expected outcomes include a state-of-the-art, open-source DSS that enables planners to quantify the climate impact of spatial strategies, a practical framework for implementing AI-assisted climate action planning in cities with limited resources, and new scientific knowledge in urban sustainability, AI applications, and NbS modeling. The project directly contributes to Sweden’s climate goals for 2030 and 2045, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the objectives of the Smart Built Environment program. By fostering collaboration between researchers, policymakers, and planners, this work will accelerate the transition to climate-neutral cities and provide a scalable model for urban climate action worldwide.

New transport infrastructure affects biodiversity by creating barriers for animals and plants, leading to habitat fragmentation. The purpose of the project is to contribute to more economically efficient and sustainable transport planning by developing tools that make the link between biodiversity, habitat, ecosystem services, and socio-economic values visible.

Public procurement accounts for about one fifth of Swedish GDP and is thus a very powerful tool for helping to transform our society in a more sustainable direction. It offers great opportunities to influence suppliers and bidders to include both environmental aspects and social and economic sustainability throughout the life cycle.

In this study, investigation and optimisation of the use of low-cost affordable adsorbents to remove fluoride and Arsenic from water will be perfected at laboratory scale, and a pilot water defluoridation plant will be constructed and tested.

Circular flows of nitrogen and phosphorus are desirable for several reasons, though bioeconomy activities that provide this valuable externality may not be recognised, supported or encouraged for doing so. This project explores and compares current and future bioeconomy activities that can contribute to the recovery and reuse of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Soil carbon sequestration in croplands has tremendous potential to help mitigate climate change; however, it is challenging to develop the optimal management practices for maximization of the sequestered carbon as well as the crop yield.

PUDDLE JUMP will contribute to “joined up” thinking about hydrological and other ecosystem services (ES) that can be provided by small artificial waterbodies (SAWs: ponds and wetlands).

There is no evidence, that SARS-CoV-2 is likely to become inactivated similar to non-enveloped human enteric viruses. Although the transport in subsurface dissents, this project aims to study the potential risks of the mobility and impact of SARS-CoV-2 in groundwater sources in areas with unsewered/unimproved or limited sanitation services.
