Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

Cell culture laboratory: equipment, appliances, consumables. Cell culture methods. Media and solutions. Contamination of cell cultures. Cell viability tests. Good cell culture practice. Ethical and sustainability issues related to the cell culture.

Intended learning outcomes

After completing the course the student should be able to:

  • independently subculture an animal cell line 
  • describe the equipment, appliances, and consumables needed for cell culture
  • account for the different aspects of good cell culture practice
  • perform calculations necessary for a cell line propagation and for preparation of stock solutions

Learning activities

Six Zoom meetings:

- one introductory

- five that correspond to the course lectures 1-5

Lectures will be pre-recorded and made available for the students one by one as the course proceeds.

During the meetings 2-6, we will discuss the material of the corresponding lecture and the students will write a mini-test on this material.

Due to Covid-19 situation, the practical labs in the course have to be performed on a later occasion. This will be arranged individually with each student.

Preparations before course start

Recommended prerequisites

SK2530 (Introduction to Biomedicine) or SK2531 (Biomedicine for Engineers) is recommended, but is not a requirement.

Examination and completion

Examination

  • LAB1 - Laboratory experiments, 2.0 credits, Grading scale: P, F
  • TEN1 - Written exam, 2.0 credits, Grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Laboratory experiments ( LAB1 )

Three lab sessions should be attended. During two of them, the student has to successfully perform cell subculture procedures, carrying out all needed calculations.

Written exam ( TEN1 )

Three-hour written exam in Zoom. Depending on the Covid-19 situation, the exam can be modified and supplemented by a short individual oral examination in Zoom.

Other requirements for final grade

Written exam (TEN1 2,0 credits, grade scale: A, B, C, D, E)

Grading criteria/assessment criteria

For grade A, the student should have a very good knowledge and clear understanding of all the topics discussed during the course. The student should be fluent with calculations involved in cell culture and cell treatments.

For grade C, the student should have a good knowledge and understanding of the topics discussed during the course. The student should have a clear idea of how to perform the calculations involved in cell culture and cell treatments.

For grade E, the student should have a good knowledge and understanding of the most important parts of the topics discussed during the course. The student should have a general idea of how to perform the calculations involved in cell culture and cell treatments.

Ethical approach

  • All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
  • In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
  • In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
