Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course deals with different views on color, the paint's materiality on surfaces, the influence of light, the relation between paint as a material and the visual perception of color. The following themes are treated in the course: viewing/perception, color manifested in early modernism, color in the Swiss architecture of today, color in the form of translucency and colored light. In individual and group assignments the student presents own results in words and in model or full scale studies.

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to develop the student's ability to see, observe and reflect on color in architecture. The student will obtain an active and focused approach to color. By means of theoretical aspects the student will be able to perform critical studies of color and paint in space and architecture.
After taking the course the student is supposed to:
– have knowledge about historical and contemporary color references
– have understanding of more color aspects than the physical paint material
– be able to describe in words the visual perception of color, i.e. to communicate about color
