AD234V Quality Issues in Architecture 7.5 credits

This course has three overall objectives. Firstly, the student will learn about quality issues and be able to show how quality as a key-concept is used in architecture. Secondly, the student shall develop her/his capability to describe the use of quality criteria and the professional way of judging quality in architecture projects. Thirdly, the student will through an individual work (paper) get a deeper understanding of quality issues in architecture, that are of great importance for both the profession, client and the end-user.

Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course will be dealing with the following subjects:

  • Practical research methods in the field of architecture
  • Theories on architecture quality
  • Quality work, examples from practice
  • Architecture competitions – how to find a prize winner?
  • Architecture awards – how do the jury present and motivate their choices?
  • Quality in the national architectural polices in the Nordic countries

Literature and preparations

Specific prerequisites

  • 60 credits within a broad field of architecture and the build environment. This includes interior design, building design, construction, urban design, landscape architecture and physical planning

  • Documented proficiency in Swedish B and English A or equivalent

  • MOM1 - 75% participation on lectures and exercises, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
  • MOM2 - Essay and PA, 5.0 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

Other requirements for final grade
