Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

The course focuses on the growth of communication systems in a historical perspective and the effects these systems have had on a societal level. In the course a number of theories and methods are presented by which it is possible to analyse media technologies from a humanistic and social perspective. The course includes 4 sections: lectures, seminars, text reflections and one report.

Intended learning outcomes

After the course the student shall be able to:

  • give examples of the historical development of some communication medias and the their cultural and social consequences
  • explain and use theoretical concepts presented in the course, such as sociotechnological systems and technological determinism
  • formulate a question, based on the humanities or social sciences relating to media, and answer that question in a structured report
  • search for material in library data bases
  • apply a source critical method on both oral and written sources
  • critically analyse a statement on a certain technology or technological change with the help of concepts presented in the course
