Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
The course focuses on the growth of communication systems in a historical perspective and the effects these systems have had on a societal level. In the course a number of theories and methods are presented by which it is possible to analyse media technologies from a humanistic and social perspective. The course includes 4 sections: lectures, seminars, text reflections and one report.
Intended learning outcomes
After the course the student shall be able to:
- give examples of the historical development of some communication medias and the their cultural and social consequences
- explain and use theoretical concepts presented in the course, such as sociotechnological systems and technological determinism
- formulate a question, based on the humanities or social sciences relating to media, and answer that question in a structured report
- search for material in library data bases
- apply a source critical method on both oral and written sources
- critically analyse a statement on a certain technology or technological change with the help of concepts presented in the course

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
Grading scale
Examination
- SEM1 - Seminars, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
- TEN1 - Examination, 3.0 credits, grading scale: A, B, C, D, E, FX, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
Other requirements for final grade
Active participation in seminars, four text reflections and one report (8 pages) (SEM1; 3 cr), (TEN1; 3 cr).
Opportunity to complete the requirements via supplementary examination
Opportunity to raise an approved grade via renewed examination
