Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
The doctoral course Concepts and Theories in Architecture aims to give the student a wide and deep understanding of concepts and theories in the field of architecture and how these relate to adjoining fields. The course will give a good overview of different developing and concurrently used concepts and theories at the same time as considerable wight is given to knowledge and understanding of the long history, background and development of the field. The course also contains a focused deeper study related to the students own project or interest.
The course consists of one historically focused part and one part focused on contemporary theory of approximately 3 credits each. The concurrent part on contemporary theory includes concepts and theories of the different specializations active at the School of Architecture. These parts follow a structure that requires preparation and active participation of the students. In addition, students are expected to make an individual, deeper study. Specific layout and requirements are difined in the announcement each time the course is run.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing the course the doctoral student should be able to
- Make an overview description of architecture theory historically
- Make an overview description of contemporary concepts and theories in architecture
- Identify and discuss central problems within concurrent research directions in architecture
- Make a thorough description of one or a select number of specific theories
- Relate and ciritically reflect over one´s own research project to historic and contemporary discourses in Architecture research

Specific prerequisites
Prerequisites
In order to follow the course a student must have completed a Masters´degree in Architecture or adjoining fields, or have an equivalent level of education.

Examination and completion
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
Grading scale
Examination
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
Other requirements for final grade
The course is examined through active participation in seminars and submissions, presentations, and the writing of essays. Participation in all examining events is required, as well as the completion of all submissions and presentations. The course is graded P/F. The course is compulsory within the Doctoral Programme in Architecture. Examiner for each iteration of the course is defined in the course PM
