F1A5051 Philosophies in Architecture 7.5 credits

This course is composed of three modules, and also a concluding module where participants will be expected to make final presentations for the purposes of examination. Participants will be expected to undertake a close reading of a minimum of three key essays drawn from the fields of philosophy and architecture theory per module. Specific number of text per session is defined in Course PM.

By attending this course participants can expect to develop an ability to define key concepts and arguments from architecture theory and philosopnhy as introduced in the course literature, as well as develop tools for extending their literature surveys. After the course students will

• have developed skills inclose reading and ciritical and creative writing exercises,which they will share via a web-based platform or seminar blog.
• be able to theorise self-directed design research projects using key concepts and arguments and create new or hybrid concepts relevant to their current research projects.
• have developed an advanced ability to actively participate in seminar discussions at a high level (PhD equivalent) on a broad range of subjects related to philosophy and architecture.

Prerequisites
In order to follow the course a student must have completed a Masters´s degree in architecture or adjoining fields, or have an equivalent level of education. Priority is given to students enrolled att KTH or as doctoral students in architecture at other universities.

If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

• DEL1 - Participation, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
• INL1 - Homework, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F
• UPP1 - Written report, 2.5 credits, grading scale: P, F

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.

The course will be assessed via teaching-learning activities carried out within the course in response to key readings, seminar discussion, collaborative group work, and guest lectures, as well as via a final presentation. In order to be awarded a degree all parts of the course needs to be concluded.
