The course is spread over the entire doctoral education and comprises of regularly seminars at division as well as attendance at defences at the department of chemical engineering.
FCK3401 Seminar Course in Research in Chemical Engineering 4.0 credits

The aim of the course is to give graduate students the practical skills to analyse, discuss, and evaluate research in chemical engineering to both obtain a broad knowledge of chemical engineering in general and depth within the own research topic. The course also provides a practice in how to orally present and defend the participants and others’ research.

Course disposition
Course contents
The course is based on active participation in regular seminar activities at the Department of Chemical Engineering, KTH or other relevant fora or consortia for deepening and scientific discussion of the own research topic. The doctoral student must present his/her own research and take part in other people's research both locally at the department and from other groups' publications that are discussed during the seminars. For broader knowledge and insight into other research in chemical engineering, participants must also attend the PhD defenses at Chemical Engineering (at least the initial presentation) and docent lectures and write a reflection on them. The course runs throughout the doctoral education and is examined by the main supervisor with 1 credit per year. The attendance requirement is 70%.
Intended learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the doctoral student should have the knowledge and ability to:
• identify good scientific culture and practise
• reason and discuss scientific results within the research methodology in chemical engineering
• prepare and deliver an oral presentation about own and others’ research within the own subject area
• critically review one's own and others' scientific texts and oral presentations through constructive criticism on, for example, content, structure, and clarity, as well as apply criticism in the revision of one's own texts and oral presentations
Literature and preparations
Specific prerequisites
Eligible for studies at the third-cycle level in the topic Chemical Engineering.
Recommended prerequisites
The graduate student should have a Master in Chemical Engineering or equivalent or have acquired the knowledge from elsewhere.
Literature
Examination and completion
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.
Grading scale
Examination
- SEM1 - Seminars, 4.0 credits, grading scale: P, F
Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
Other requirements for final grade
Active participation in 70% of regular seminar activities (at least 1 occasion/month), which includes presenting own research at least once a semester and actively participating in discussions of others' scientific works. The seminar activities also include half-term seminars.
Participation in 70% of the department's PhD defenses (at least initial presentation).
Submission of a reflection about attended PhD defenses once a year.
If the participation is lower than the requirements above, the credits can be adjusted accordingly.
Examiner
Ethical approach
- All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
- In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
- In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
