LS1409 English B1 - Essential Grammar and Vocabulary 7.5 credits

The course is not offered during the academic year 18/19. If you have a very weak command of English, please contact the course examiner for information about other possibilities for assistance.

The course is only suitable for those who do not have documented or actual skills in English corresponding to B2 level according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

• Overview of basic English grammar and academic vocabulary
• Exercises and feedback on scientific English
• Listening comprehension exercises/reading and discussions of authentic material to increase the understanding of current issues within technology and natural sciences (e.g. sustainable development, technological breakthroughs).
• Formal individual presentations, including preparations
• Technical descriptions of tools, graphical data and processes

Intended learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to give an overview of English grammar and vocabulary to students who need basic support to manage their studies and future careers. The course gives general knowledge and skills in the English language, scientific English in speech and writing, text, structure and global skills.

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

• understand clearly spoken factual information and the main contents of clear standard speech on subjects within the student's field of study or fields of personal interest

• read texts of some length within specialised technical or scientific fields

• give a formal presentation and communicate what he/she wants without great communication difficulties

• account for the difference between informal and formal language and write short technical descriptions without serious language errors

The expected learning outcomes for the course mainly refer to the level B1 according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The students are responsible themselves to check their prior knowledge through a test taken before choosing the course.
