Content and learning outcomes

Course contents

This is an asynchronous online course designed to help students transition from undergraduate studies, which are mainly conducted in Swedish, to postgraduate studies, which are mainly conducted in English.

It is intended to help students prepare for academic studies in academic and scientific fields where English is the language of instruction. Students explore topics through reading, audio-visual material and study resources, and are supported by reflective activities.

Throughout the course, the focus is on communication using clear, concise and precise English.

 There are six modules:

 1. Understanding academic culture

2. Understanding and producing academic language and discourse

3. Communicating within STEM

4. Referencing sources

5. Working with critical thinking and creativity

6. Optimising your learning

Intended learning outcomes

Students explore key aspects of academic language, discourse and culture in English-speaking contexts.

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. identify principles and conventions of academic language and discourse in English and apply them in academic contexts.

2. communicate technical knowledge and ideas clearly and professionally.

3. adapt scientific communication to different audiences within STEM.

4. apply critical and creative approaches to learning, communication and AI tools.
