Before choosing course

The course introduces you to the field of materials and provides an insight into your upcoming professional role. In introductory lectures, material design and choice of materials as well as the relationships between structure and properties of the different material groups of metals, ceramics, polymers and fiber-based materials are presented. In the course, you are also engaged in a materials selection project. Other elements included are project work with group dynamics etc. as well as oral and written technical reporting.

Intended learning outcomes
After passing the course, the student should be able to:
- Define, give an account of and describe basic concepts in material design

- Describe relationships between performance-characteristics-structure-production for engineering materials and functional materials.
- Describe and discuss sustainable development in material design
- Search, retrieve, refer and evaluate information from different sources
- Plan and carry out a project in groups and present it written and oral
- Apply and justify choices of material for simple applications/final products
