Ongoing research projects

Statistics on emissions of greenhouse gases from the Swedish consumption are calculated on a regular basis. The method, now implemented by Statistics Sweden, was developed in previous research projects and combine data from the Swedish System for Environmental and Economic Accounts, and an international Environmentally Extended Multi-Regional Input-Output Analysis (MRIO) model. Data from these calculations are currently used in a number of applications and policy processes on both national and local levels. The methods do however have some limitations which were described for example by the cross-party parliamentary committee on consumptionbased climate goals. These include the need to increase the granularity of data for some product groups and the possibilities to make future scenarios for the consumption-based emission. The overall aim of this project is to improve data and methods for calculating consumption-based emissions as well as testing the new methods in policy-relevant scenarios. Data and methods will be improved for food products, impacts from aviation and biofuels. A MRIO model currently developed by Eurostat will be evaluated for possible use in future statistics. Methods for alculating future scenarios for emissions of greenhouse gases from Swedish consumption will be developed for the same methodological framework that the current statistics are produced by. Different types of future scenarios will be calculated.

The aim of this project is to analyse the environmental impacts of increased digitalization and the use of Information and Communication Technologies.

Bio Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) is widely recognized as a vital technology for reaching the climate goals of the Paris Agreement. Despite this, BECCS has yet failed to move beyond small scale demonstration units. One notable hurdle, deterring investments, is the energy penalty of operating BECCS with a power plant.

The main objective is effective generation of sustainable and renewable energy through forest biomass feedstock.

The urgency of climate change and the aspirations to protect the environment has directed the attention towards the building sector to reduce its environmental impacts. The advancements in information and communication technologies (ICT) have provided many opportunities for digitization in the building sector to improve the operations and processes. Some applications of digitalization in buildings include space use efficiency, building automation, energy management, demand response, behavior change campaigns, and predictive maintenance. As ICT becomes more cost-effective and adaptable, new applications of digitization in buildings continuously emerge.

Mistra Sport & Outdoors is a research and collaboration programme to generate knowledge and solutions for increased sustainability in sport and outdoor recreation. We believe that collaboration between research, organisations, authorities and companies is the way forward.

Climate change and increased electricity demand put accelerating pressure on electricity generation from renewable or at least fossil free energy sources, where wind power is expected to play a key role. However, wind power comes with certain social and ecological impacts as well as techno-economic conditions that need to be taken into account at an early stage in policy-making and planning. Therefore, the ability to strengthen wind power planning on regional and municipal levels is urgent, while integrating the complicated palette of conditions and impacts in a way that is open for stakeholder engagement.

Population growth and urbanization has led to an increase in resource intensive and energy rich foods, where the public sector accounts for a large share of food consumption. This research project analyses the criteria that can be used in public procurement to influence sustainability of food consumption and production.

Prospective LCA of emerging technologies (KTH/SEED, M1-M42)

The “Sustainable Energy Transformations in Aviation (SETA)” project aims to contribute to an acceleration of sustainable energy transformations in aviation, with a focus on bio-based jet fuels and electric aircrafts. The project will be exploring the socio-technical opportunities and barriers related to these transformations.
