Guide before, during and after your exchange studies
Have you been awarded an exchange place through KTH? Congratulations! Here, you will find important information and valuable tips before, during and after your time abroad.
Before departure
1. Plan your studies
Before your exchange, you should make a study plan with the courses you plan to take. Your international coordinator will contact you with more information about your study plan.
Before your exchange studies, you must formally apply to the exchange university. You make your application the semester before you leave, but the timing depends on which university you are going to. Your international coordinator will contact you when it is time for you to apply.
3. Safety, passport, insurance and health
Study your destination thoroughly before your exchange. Also, find out what applies to passports, visas, vaccinations and other necessary things for your time abroad.
Exchange studies don't have to involve any significant additional costs. Review how you should use your regular student funds and whether you should apply for a scholarship.
Try to travel as sustainably as possible. You can get compensation if you take the train to exchange destinations within Europe. If you have to fly, there are ways to keep emissions down.
Sort out the last practical things before your exchange and find accommodation. Don't forget to bring essential documents and register for your exchange in Ladok.
As a KTH student, you are expected to give a presentation about exchange studies at KTH if asked, for example, in connection with fairs or information meetings. Therefore, we have developed a presentation and guide that we would like to encourage you to use.
If something unforeseen happens, for example, if you have problems with your studies, have health issues, become a victim of crime, or encounter difficulties in other ways, you must contact KTH via your international coordinator.
If you need medical care or become a victim of crime, you should also report this to Kammarkollegiet via your Student UT insurance.
Share your exchange studies on KTH's Instagram!
Do you want to inspire other KTH students by sharing your exchange studies experience? Fill out this form to express interest in being featured on @kthstudent!
Before you return home, you must apply for courses for your next semester at KTH. You must make apply for your courses for the autumn semester in May, and for the spring semester in November.
Certificate of attendance, if you have studied in Europe
If you have completed exchange studies in Europe, you must, to receive the second payment of the Erasmus scholarship, upload a final Digital Learning Agreement together with a Certificate of Attendance (pdf 531 kB) signed by the exchange university upon your return home.
After finishing your exchange studies, you must apply for a credit transfer, which does not happen automatically.
You must submit a completed credit transfer application to your international coordinator. You also need to attach a transcript of records from the host university, as well as course descriptions for all courses if they have not been approved in a previous study plan.
All students who have completed exchange studies must write a travel report. The travel reports help KTH follow up on the cooperation with the exchange universities and are essential to informing and inspiring future students before their travels.
Feel free to start your travel report at the beginning of your exchange when your impressions are fresh. Finish writing the travel report when you have returned home and upload it to Mobility Online.
The international coordinators will invite you to KTH's Homecoming Event when you return from your exchange. There, you will meet other students who have been abroad and KTH staff. The Homecoming Event usually takes place at the start of the autumn semester.
If you are still a student the academic year after your exchange, you can work as an exchange ambassador and/or share your experiences at KTH Global. You will receive more information by email after your exchange.
Start planning your next adventure abroad
Exchange studies are just one of many ways to study abroad through KTH. For example, you can do your thesis abroad, complete an internship or take a summer course. Scholarships through Erasmus+ can be applied for 12 months per study level (bachelor's and master's level). If you have not already used all the months of your study level for exchange studies, you can still apply for the remaining months for exchange, thesis or internship.
