Content and learning outcomes
Course contents
This course aims for its participants to reflect on and make decisions about communicating their technical-specific knowledge and skills in both academic and professional contexts. There is a focus on clear, concise, and precise English. It includes reflection, discussion, reading and listening comprehension exercises, and writing and video assignments that reflect both academic and professional contexts. Course participants can expect training in and personal feedback on:
- advanced scientific English
- language and discourse analysis
- effective peer review
Intended learning outcomes
In a language-focused learning environment and with course participants from different technical disciplines, the students learn both the mechanics of English and strategies to communicate their technical knowledge in clear, concise, and precise English.
After passing the course, the students should be able to:
identify the principles and conventions of discourse in their technical discipline, and apply them in different academic and professional contexts
adapt communication about their technical discipline to different academic and professional audiences
compare, evaluate, and reflect on how technical knowledge be communicated in academic and professional contexts
take stock of their technology-specific knowledge, ideas, and skills, and account for how they can be transferred to professional contexts

Support for students with disabilities

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.
The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students.
If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years.

In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
