PARTIAL EXAMS There has been many questions concerning the partial exams; therefore, some clarifications are given here.¶

The partial exams are being tested in the course this year. The main idea of the partial exams is to reduce the stress during the final exam for students aiming for a higher grade, by allowing students to focus on part II instead of doing part I and II during the same time---the risk is then that too much effort is put on part II and that the student fails the exam. A secondary objective of the partial exams is to encourage students to study continuously.¶

The three partial exams are together equivalent to first part of the final exam. (You may consider the partial exams as an extra occasion for writing the final exam, but divided in three parts of one hour each.) The problems are of the same type and give the same score as the correspondinig problem in the final exam:¶

* KS1
* Problem 1: Structure of an electricity market, 4 points
* Problem 2: Electricity pricing, 6 points
* Problem 3: Frequency control, 6 points

* KS2
* Problem 4: Short-term planning, 12 points

* KS3
* Problem 5: Simulation of electricity markets, 12 points

Students who obtain a total score of at least 33 points in the three partial exams can skip the first part of the exam. Students may of course still choose to rewrite part I of the exam in order to improve their score; in the final score of the exam, the best result will be used of the partial exams or part I of the actual exam.¶

The aids allowed during the partial exams are the same as for the final exam:¶

* Calculator without information relevant to the course.
* One handwritten, single-sided A4-page with your own notes (original, not a copy), which should be handed in together with the exam.
Please notice that it is mandatory to sign up for the partial exams using KTH My pages!

Hi,
there are some problems in Home Assignment I that are somewhat unclear. I hope we could get some clarities around these matters as they might be troubling other students aswell.
Problem 1: Are we looking for one common nordic electricity price? Or one electricity price per country, i.e one for Sweden and one for Denmark?
Problem 5: Do we consider the same variable operation cost for the fifth nuclear power plant than for those that have already been built in Finland?
Problem 6: Is the total nordic consumption increased by 2.5% or is it only Finlands consumption that is increasing? (The question seems to refer to problem 5, thus the confusion)

Thanks in advance

Daniel Brodén

Lärare kommenterade 22 januari 2013

Problem 1: We are assuming that Sweden and Denmark has a common electricity market. Would it then be possible to have different electricity prices in Sweden and Denmark?

Problem 5: This question is about making a rough estimate; therefore, you can pick any variable operation cost within the price interval for the existing nuclear power plants.

Problem 6: It is the total Nordic consumption that increases by 2.5%.

kommenterade 23 januari 2013

Hi, while working with Problem 3 in the matlab program I encountered a few problems:

While computing the price for a dry year (as stated in the question) no price is given, instead the program calculates that there is a lack of energy because the supply side cannot reach the demand. Is this a programming error?  However there is a line called Extra Import with values that ranges from 0 to 4.5 TWh depending on countries. Is the point that these numbers should be changed based on the information in Table 1 (as reffered to in the question) in order to import enough to satisfy the demand?

When calculating the energy left to import, should we add the numbers in the row called Extra Imports to the total imports? (as the numbers in this row must come from the cables in Table 1?)

Thank you

Lärare kommenterade 24 januari 2013

There are several ways to determine the need for import to the Nordic countries during a dry year. Choose the one you like best.

We want you to state the frequency in each area. Whether or not the frequency is the same in several areas is for you to determine. (Hint: How many synchronous grids are there in the system?)

Hi,

I have a question regarding the bonus assignment 20 of homework 4. When simulating with the ppc.m script for a segment size of 70-75 I get unconsistent results on ETOC, LOLP and EENS. Otherwise the trend I notice is that my ETOC decreases with decreasing segment size and my LOLP increases. I guess my question is why do we suddenly get a total different phenomena when setting the segment size to 75?

Thanks in advance

Lärare kommenterade 4 mars 2013

What other segment sizes did you test? You need a lot of samples (I would say at least 50 for this problem) to analyse the trend---it is not as unambigious as one might think!

Although it is interesting to study the trend and analyse how the segment size affects the resutls, please notice that the question is about the importance of the segment size and whether it changes the conclusion on the profitability of the wind farm investment.

kommenterade 5 mars 2013

I used segment sizes 100, 75, 50, 25 and 1. So maybe I should test for segment sizes below 10ish to get above 50 samples? The problem is that I do not see any clear trend between segment size reduction and ETOC for example. What I was hoping to see was that ETOC or LOLP would decrease or increase as I was reducing my segment size. However I can not draw such a conclusion because it seems to be nonlinear. Intuitively I would think that a segment size reduction increases the number of samples and thus makes the expected result variables more accurate. Even though this might not affect the question stated in the problem, I find it hard to understand why we get such "random" variations in the expected result variables when decreasing the segment size.

Lärare kommenterade 5 mars 2013

The segment size reflects how well the approximate duration curves corresponds to the real curve. What you describe as "random" variations is more of a threshold effect, when certain points of the approximate curve moves due to changes in the segment borders.

If you want to study the trend, it is better to test evenly distributed segment sizes up to 100 MW (for example 100, 95, 90, ... 5 MW or---if you have patience enough---100, 99.5, 99, ... 0.5 MW).

MORE SEMINARS AND COMPENDIA The number of participants in this course is far higher than expected when the course was scheduled last year. Consequently, we need to add more home assignment seminars to the schedule, as well as order more compendia from the printer. We regret the resulting inconvenience for the affected students, and hope that you can have patience. It will take some time to find available rooms and teaching assistants for the seminars and for the printer to deliver new copies of the course compendia. Meanwhile, what you can do as a student is to fill out the on-line form for our internal student register---this will help us in the planning of the course. Please select Course registration in the menu to the left and follow the link to the registrucations form.

maybe I found a mistake in the solution from the complementary test 4th April 2011. In Problem 4 c) are only index g=1,...,3 mentioned and g=4, g=5 are missing. Is it a failure or do I understand something wrong?

Best regards

Lärare kommenterade 8 april 2013

You are right, the indexing should be g = 1, ..., 5, t = 1, ..., 24 for both the binary variables.

I tried to find the course evaluation forms but didn't find it, so:

I find that the current structure of dividing the exam into part 1 and part 2 does not properly reflect the ability of the students. Especially when we are not allowed to justify our answers in part 1, which makes any small mistake we make crucial! This system penalizes students that have the ambition to get a higher grade since we try to finish both parts in the time given and by consequence spend less time on part 1, which leads us to make simple mistakes (most often non-conceptual!). In EG2060 Electricity Market Analysis, (which had the same exam structure as EG2050) the responsible teachers have acknowledged this poor method and have thereby completly changed it. In the long run this will only encourage people to set the bar low and go for that sufficient low grade as "hedging" (i.e going for the high grade), is in no way rewarded nor encouraged. This is my personal opinion, but I know a lot of students share it.

kommenterade 3 april 2013

I totally agree with Daniel.

I understand that it's crucial that we know the basics within all covered subjects but as Daniel points out, the understanding of concept should be considered and not just the final answer. This is true for the Bonus assignments as well, they seem to reward the final answers and not the conceptual thinking.

In my opinion the system with 2 exams should be discarded for a solution with 2 separeted exams (preferably with part 1 as written test "kontrollskrivning"). Part one should be done until passed and the grade should then be based on the result on part 2 alone.

Thereby the students will get grade based on deep knowledge and the conceptual understanding av all covered subjects is secured by passing part 1.

Lärare kommenterade 4 april 2013

The idea of the problems in part I of the exam is that if the student understands the concept, the final result should either be obvious or trivial to calculate. You are welcome to provide feedback on problems that you do not think correspond to this idea.

Dividing the exam in two parts is not an optimal solution, and I am considering to introduce an alternative examination next year, where we have three partial exams during the course. The problems in these partial exams should correspond to the first part of the exam. Students who pass the partial exams may then skip part I of the exam, and may write part II in order to get a higher grade. Students who do not pass all the partial exams will have to write part I in the exam (and optionally part II) in the same way as today.

Finally, so far no students have joined the course evaluation committee, but it is not too late. In connection with the meeting of the committee, the Electric Power Systems Lab will treat the participants to lunch. Please contact me if you are interested.

kommenterade 4 april 2013

I agree that part 1 should be trivial to calculate, but as long as the exam is as long as it currently is (part 1 & part 2) there will always be careless mistakes done in part 1, especially for students that try to allocate time for all exercises within this 5 hour exam span. Thinking back I would have been better off completly neglegting problem 8 and problem 9 and putting more attention on the previous exercises. Moreover, since we are only allowed to provide answers for part 1 it discourages students from writing any proper solution on paper explaining our stream of thoughs, a practice that it very useful to review and detect careless mistakes. I guess for part 1 that there is a tradeoff to be made between reduced correction burden and student achievement rate.
