Seminar 1 - Study Networked Systems ans Services Master - Why and How?

Reflection submission deadline: see "Submission and seminar dates..."

Seminar date and time: see  "Submission and seminar dates..."

In this first seminar we will discuss why you choose this particular master program, what your expectations are/were and how these are matched by our program. Moreover, we will  dive in what learning is, what it really means to know something, and what the different levels and forms of learning are. Your specific task will differ, depending on if you study the first or the second year at the master level, see below.

Reading before the seminar

To recall the objectives of TNSSM, please read the programme objectives and the marketing text.

Several attempts have been done to classify different forms of learning objectives. One of the most popular is the so-called Bloom's taxonomy. To get a brief overview, please read the following:

Written reflection

General advice:

  • Read the reading assignment thoroughly, use the material extensively in your reflection text.
  • In your reflection text refer to the reading material, as to all other references you may have. E.g., numbered list at the end of the document, reference with number at the appropriate points of the text.
  • In your reflection text, be specific. Give arguments, and support your arguments with references or examples.
  • Write a continuous text, use the questions ans guidelines.

For 1st year students:

Write a reflecting text of 500-600 words (about a page) answering the following questions

  • Why did you choose this particular programme?
  • What are your life time goals (career related)?
  • What are your goals for the ongoing academic year?
  • How do the programme, as described in the programme descriptions, match your expectations and goals?
  • Now that you have  spent a number of weeks here at KTH, have you noticed any difference in the learning objectives at KTH, as compared to your previous studies?

For 2nd year students:

Write a reflecting text of 500-600 words (about a page) answering the following questions

  • What does it mean for you to learn something?
  • What form of learning was valued the most in your BSc program?
  • Have you noticed any difference in the attitude towards learning here during your masters studies, compared to your BSc studies? Does it pose an additional challenge?
  • What form of learning will be most useful for your future career?
  • What is your most important piece of advice to the first year students in the program?

Write your name at the top of the page. Save the document in PDF format (there are several free PDF converters available, for example PrimoPDF if your word processing software does not support PDF).

Upload the document in the Course Wiki, under the right group. You need to be logged in to KTH and be registered for the  course to be able to do this. If you have problems with uploading, contact Viktoria.

Before the seminar

You will find all the reflection texts in the course wiki.

Read all the reflecting documents before and after your own one (within the group). Mark the sentences that you find particularly interesting or important.

During the seminar

Take active part in the discussions!

See you all at the seminar!
