This PhD student position is part of SwedNess (www.SwedNess.se), the Swedish national graduate school for neutron scattering where KTH is one of the responsible academic institutions. The school is fully funded by the Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) and aims to educate a new generation of highly skilled neutron experts. Each PhD student is fully funded from the start, including salary and a sufficient running budget. The latter will give the student possibilities to travel to external experiments and to visit international facilities, institutions and conferences.

Job description 

Modern condensed matter physics is the source of some of the most fascinating fundamental phenomena, e.g. topological insulators, superconductors and Bose-Einstein condensation. Such quantum states also possess intriguing and promising possibilities for future technical developments including sustainable energy, spintronics and quantum computation/security. In order to obtain a paradigm shift within this important field we need to both develop and understand a new generation of quantum materials. The main goal of this project is to realize and characterize model quantum systems for 1D, 2D and 3D magnetic lattices. This will be realized by:

  1. Identifying promising spin compounds by performing virtual material synthesis through analysis, modeling and mining of our own extensive quantum materials database.
  2. Establishing a new lab for synthesizing high-quality single crystalline quantum magnets.
  3. Using powerful large-scale experimental techniques to perform systematic studies of spin entanglement in selected materials by accessing magnetic and electronic structures/excitations.

In detail the work will consist of hand-on experimental measurements, data analysis and to some extent computer modeling. The materials of interest will mainly be organometallic quantum magnets and the experimental techniques include state-of-the-art neutron scattering along with complimentary muon spin spectroscopy and synchrotron methods. The successful PhD candidate that will join this comprehensive project and experienced team should mainly focus on the experimental neutron scattering studies. However, depending on his/her qualifications and scientific interests, it is also possible to partake in the sample growth and/or theoretical modeling.

The recruited PhD student will be based in the Department of Applied Physics at KTH in Stockholm, but the project will be conducted in close collaboration with several well renowned international research teams. The majority of the experimental work will be conducted at external research facilities in Switzerland, France, United Kingdom and Japan. The employment is four years with a possibility of maximum up to five years. Up to 20 percent department duties (e.g. teaching) are included in the employment.

Qualifications

A suitable background for this position would be a Master of Science (or equivalent) in Physics (materials, solid state, theoretical or applied) or Chemistry (solid state). Prior experience in materials characterization techniques (diffraction, spectroscopy, susceptibility/magnetization etc.) and especially large-scale experimental facilities (neutron, synchrotron or muon) is highly meriting but not mandatory. Since the majority of the project consists of hands-on work in the lab, practical skills will be considered valuable. Further, the project is run in a wide international collaboration, hence, adaptive communication skills and social dexterity should be applicable to ensure a pleasant and productive team work. Finally, profound knowledge in written and spoken English is necessary and some prior knowledge in programming (e.g. Matlab) is preferable.
