Group projects

You have the possibility to obtain up to 6 bonus points by defining, implementing and presenting a group project work. The bonus points can be used to improve your grade if you pass the final exam (i.e., if you achieve grade E without the bonus points). The group projects can be done in groups of up to 3 students. The goal of the project is to give you hands on experience with the development of networked systems. The schedule and format of the project work is the following.

  • 2016 September 21 - submit the project proposal via email (max 1 A4 page) as a PDF file, containing the list of the group members, and a brief description of the proposed project.
  • 2016 September 23 - project feedback/approval by lecturers, setting the number of obtainable bonus points for the group.
  • 2016 November 6 (23:59 pm) - submission of the individual project reports and the results of the project.
  • 2016 November 7 (12:15 pm) - project presentations. Location: LCN seminar room, Osquldas väg 6, floor 4 (Q-building).

Guidelines:

Project topic: You are free to choose any topic for the project in the area of networking. The ambition of the project determines the maximum amount of bonus points that you can be awarded. As a guideline, a project worth 18 points should account for about 3 manweeks of fulltime work.

Implementation: You are allowed to use any software available (e.g., under GPL or LGPL) to implement your system, but you are expected to clearly state in the report if your implementation relies on software developed by others. Failing to do so qualifies as plagiarism, and results in the cancellation of the bonus points.

Project report: The individual project report should be at most 3 A4 pages long, and should explain your role in the project, the problems you faced and the way you solved the problems.

Project presentation: The group's presentation should be about 10 minutes long, and should cover the motivation of the project, the design of your system, the difficulties you faced during the design and the implementation, some performance results if applicable, and the lessons learned. The project members that do not present will have to answer the eventual questions of the evaluators and the audience.

Project grading: The evaluators will award a number of bonus points to the project (based on the maximum number of points agreed upon and the quality of the implementation, the reports, and the presentation). The group members can deviate from equally splitting the points among each other by (-1,+2) points per person (e.g., given 12 points you can split 3+6+3 instead of 4+4+4). You will have to decide how to split the points immediately, before knowing the results of the exam.
