Speaker: Fredrik Brännström, Chalmers University of Technology (formerly Principal Design Engineer, Quantenna Communications, Inc., Fremont, CA, http://www.quantenna.com) Title: WiFi 802.11a/g/n/ac Abstract: This seminar starts with a short story on how the speaker became the first employee (after the founders) of Quantenna Communications and how it is to work at a startup company in Silicon Valley. The technical part of the seminar includes an overview of the blocks in the PHY layer of WiFi 802.11a/g (54 Mbps) followed by a discussion on how the rate could be increased to 600 Mbps in 802.11n and to almost 7 Gbps in the latest 802.11ac standard. |

Mån 16 feb 17:00-19:00 | Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Broadcast Channels
VT 2015
Seminarium
|
Speaker: Majid Khormuji, Huawei Sweden Title: Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Broadcast Channels Abstract: In cellular wireless systems, multiple access is usually performed by allocating orthogonal sets of time-frequency resources to different users. This way, inter-user interference is reduced and the receiver task of separating users' signals is made easier. However, it is well known that orthogonal transmission schemes do not achieve the capacity of multiuser channels. In the downlink, multiple access schemes performing simultaneous transmission to multiple users, like those based on the principle of superposition coding, can be employed in order to achieve increased data rates. In this talk, we present a new scheme coined as Rate-Adaptive Constellation Expansion Multiple Access (RA-CEMA) in which different users are non-orthogonally multiplexed by storing their codewords into a multiplexing matrix according to properly designed patterns and then mapping the columns of the matrix onto the symbols of a higher-order constellation. RA-CEMA is an alternative to the conventional superposition coding and combines the benefits of an increased spectral efficiency with the advantages of reusing the coding and modulation schemes already used in contemporary communication systems, thereby facilitating its adoption in standards. |

Ons 18 feb 17:00-19:00 | Front-end audio processing for hands-free speech communication
VT 2015
Seminarium
|
Speaker: Christian Schuldt, Limes Audio Abstract: In hands-free speech communication front-ends such as, e.g., conference phones, the microphone generally picks a desired speech signal that has been degraded by reverberation caused by the room, together with disturbing background noise and significant echo from the loudspeaker. Hence, there are three major problems that needs to be tackled: reverberation, noise and echo. This presentation will address ways of dealing with these problems, and the focus will be on practical signal processing aspects. |

Speaker: Hugo Tullberg Biography: Hugo Tullberg has a M.Sc. degree in Electrical Engineering from Lund University, and a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, Communication Theory and Systems, from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Hugo is a Master Researcher at Ericsson Research where he works with 5G communication systems. His research interests include communication and information theory, inference systems, cognitive radio, and ad hoc networking. He is the technical coordinator of the EU FP7 project METIS (Mobile and wireless communications Enablers for the Twenty-twenty Information Society) that will lay the foundation for the future mobile and wireless communications system. The main goal of METIS is to provide mobile and wireless communication solutions that enable the METIS vision of unlimited communication anywhere and anytime to anyone and anything in an efficient, scalable and versatile way. |

Title: Device-to-device (D2D) communications in a cellular network Speaker: Ricardo Blasco, Ericsson Research Abstract: A first set of features for LTE systems enabling device-to-device (D2D) communication in cellular systems have been standardized by 3GPP in Release 12 (frozen in March 2015). D2D communications depart from the fully centralized model that has been applied to cellular systems from their early days, and present new opportunities for operators as well as challenges to the existing cellular systems. In this talk, we will look at the differences between traditional, centralized, cellular communication and D2D communication, discuss the technical challenges and solutions, and present some of the standardized features for 4G/LTE. We will conclude the talk with a look at the future of D2D, including a brief discussion of ongoing work in 3GPP (Releases 13 and 14). Biography: Ricardo Blasco Serrano was born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1983. He received his M.Sc. degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC, Spain) in 2007. In 2006 he got a scholarship from the Signal Theory and Communications department at UPC to support Turbo Coding activities. During 2006-2007 he was at Lund University(LU, Sweden) as an exchange student. There he wrote his Master Thesis ("Joint Selection of Channel and Voice Coding for Secure Voice") in cooperation with Business Security AB. Shortly after receiving his M.Sc. degree he joined the Communication Theory laboratory at the KTH School of Electrical Engineering. He obtained the PhD degree in Electrical Engineering in 2013 (advisers Prof. Mikael Skoglund and Assoc. Prof. Ragnar Thobaben), after which he joined Ericsson Research. His research interests are on communication and coding strategies for cooperation and coordination in networks. |
