Background
We have implemented a communication system based on a visual channel. It can espacially be useful on flights where wireless mediums are not allowed. In our application, we read a file saved on one cell phone and convert it into a specified version of one or several QR codes. These QR codes are then displayed on the screen at a particular rate. The receiving phone takes pictures of the transmitted code and decodes them in parallel to extract the transmitted file.
In order to increase the capacity of data in the codes, we are using Quick Layered Response or Colored QR codes which increase the capacity of a code by three times. In addition, for ensuring reliability, we have also implemented an option in which the receiver can use a flash to send acknowledgements to the transmitter; hence realizing a synchronized communication system.
