The Ballot Bin

Hey peeps, hope you had an awesome weekend because I surely did thanks to an invitation from a Swedish friend to go to the second biggest city in Sweden, Gothenburg! The weekend was amazing and we surely had a lot fun over the West Coast. Weather was perfect (I love cloudy/rainy/cold days) and we had the opportunity to go around the city without suffering from high temperatures.

But it is not the weather what I want to talk about, it’s about trash! More specifically, cigarette butts! Many people smoke and many people don’t realise the power to pollute they have in their own hands while and after smoking a cigarette. Did you know that 98 % of cigarette filters are made of plastic fibers? Yes peeps, fibers that surely end in the water 🙁 and that’s without adding that these filters are filled with chemicals that dilute in the freshwater when in contact! But how come cigarette butts ended up being a topic in my trip to Gothenburg? Well, this Swedish city has implemented the next amazing British idea, watch the clip!

I’ve talked before about the damage to our environment of this type of pollution, but finding out that Gothenburg had implemented this idea on their streets was just amazing. I don’t have anything against people smoking, but I don’t accept the unconsciousness and “acceptable” cultural behavior of throwing away these things after finishing a cigarette. The materials which they are made of can last years in our environment; a study has found that barely 38 % of a cigarette butt was decomposed after 2 years… 2 YEARS! So smokers need to change their way of disposing these residues and help other smokers (not only by sharing cigarettes on parties) to educate among themselves on the environmental impact of their actions.

So bravo Gothenburg for using innovative ideas to tackle this problem! As the main source of environmental problems that Earth is having right now, we must come up with straightforward and innovative ideas to fix what we have done during so many years! With the upcoming elections taking place in 2 and a half weeks here in Sweden, maybe this idea should be spread around the country to ask people what they care about the most when it comes to voting for a Party… hmmm *thinks in spanish*

What’s warm as the Sun and spicy as a jalapeño? My home country México. My name is Fernando and I came to Sweden to study the master’s programme in Sustainable Technology at KTH. Come, join me to learn and understand the importance of having a sustainable lifestyle, and where else to do this than in Sweden?
