It is believed that DC interconnections will play a key role in the efficient and secure operation of future power systems. This is mainly due to their bulk power transmission capability and flexible control over long distances, which enables the delivery of critical system services. However, today the operation of multi DC connections is weakly coordinated, and the potential of fast power-flow capabilities are not utilized. As a solution to future low inertia scenarios, the design of Emergency Power Control (EPC) of HVDC interconnections was assessed. The EPC was coordinated with Frequency Containment Reserves (FCR) units and the dynamic requirements related to them. Modifications of the currently used EPC method in Nordic power system were proposed. The improvements in system response and reserve savings were evaluated according to the stated model.
