KTH celebrates 200 years of knowledge, innovation and societal progress
In 2027, KTH’s 200th anniversary is celebrated. What began as the Technological Institute in Stockholm in 1827 has over two centuries developed into Sweden’s largest technical university. Today, KTH is a global leader for education, research and innovation.
KTH was founded at a time when Sweden was undergoing rapid industrial transformation and the demand for technical expertise was growing. Since then, generations of engineers, architects, researchers, teachers and entrepreneurs have been educated at KTH, contributing to the development of infrastructure, industry, energy systems, digital technologies, healthcare innovations and sustainable solutions for society.
For 200 years, KTH has played a central role in Sweden’s development. From supporting the country’s industrialisation to addressing today’s global challenges, the university has been a driving force behind technological progress, scientific discovery and innovation. KTH’s research, its graduates and innovations have helped strengthen Sweden’s competitiveness, providing solutions that benefit societies around the world.
KTH’s 200th Anniversary 2027 will be marked by a broad programme of activities, bringing together students, researchers, alumni, partners and the public. Celebrations will include exhibitions, lectures, conferences, cultural events, public engagement activities and ceremonial occasions that highlight the people, ideas and breakthroughs that have shaped KTH’s history and continue to influence the future.
KTH’s 200th anniversary is not only an opportunity to reflect on two centuries of achievement. It is also a moment to look ahead and explore how education, research and innovation can contribute to a more sustainable, resilient and prosperous society for generations to come.
As KTH enters its third century, the university remains committed to its founding mission: advancing knowledge and technology in service of society and helping to address the challenges and opportunities of the future.
