AccessCoVE: A European Center for Vocational Excellence in Accessibility

Access CoVE

In Europe, ensuring accessibility is regarded as crucial for fostering a fair and inclusive society, as highlighted by key legislative frameworks such as the European Disability Strategy 2010-2020  and the more recent Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 2021-2030 . These frameworks underscore the significance of accessibility in various aspects of life. Additionally, mandates like the European Accessibility Act  reinforce this commitment, requiring Member States to ensure accessibility across products and services by June 2025.

With an increasing reliance on digital platforms for communication, access to information, and essential services, overlooking the needs of certain groups in society risks widening the gap between those with access to technology and those without. Despite the above-mentioned directives, advancements in technology and digital services often overlook accessibility considerations, placing many individuals with disabilities at a disadvantage. Moreover, physical spaces frequently lack necessary accessibility features, creating barriers to full participation for all citizens in society.

The European Center of Vocational Excellence in Accessibility (AccessCoVE), an EU Erasmus Plus project, aims to address the lack of educational programs focusing on accessibility issues for people with disabilities and the elderly in Europe. It is a collaborative effort involving partners in four European countries: Greece, Sweden, Spain, and Italy. The Swedish partners in this initiative include ChangeMaker Educations  and Begripsam .

By establishing AccessCoVE, the project seeks to bridge knowledge gaps and become a credible hub for accessibility-related knowledge. Partnering with organizations across Greece, Sweden, Spain, and Italy, AccessCoVE will conduct extensive research to understand the needs of individuals with disabilities and the elderly. Through qualitative and quantitative data collection, the project aims to evaluate current accessibility standards and with a user-centered approach identify grounds for improvements.

Over four years, AccessCoVE aims to develop resources, inform policymaking, and promote social sustainability in society. Research findings will inform the development of vocational education and training (VET) programs and curricula, introducing new roles of an Accessibility Certifier and an Accessibility Consultant to meet the demand for skilled professionals in the field.
