Abstract: Green industrial transformations towards environmental sustainability are required worldwide to enable industries, economies and societies to operate within the planetary boundaries.

Transformations of energy-related industries are especially important as approximately 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from energy-related activities, according to estimates by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

This includes especially fossil fuel combustion from electricity generation, heating, cooling and industrial processes, as well as fossil fuel use in transport. The energy system is currently undergoing major transformations due to climate change and the need for low carbon energy sources, due to changes from predominantly centralised to more decentralized energy sources and due to the digitalisation of energy-related industries.

This docent lecture will discuss recent research and teaching in the field of sustainable energy transitions for achieving green industrial transformations, including with regards to various regional dynamics, innovation in renewable energy technology and sectoral approaches.
