Abstract: This lecture outlines the problem of physical asset investments in power systems, starting with a short look back to the heavy investments of the 70’s and 80’s. The equipment installed in that era had a designed lifetime of circa 40 years, which sets the problem of today; a potential replacement boom. The lecture continues to investigate strategies that can be applied today to solve the situation. Two major categories have been identified as main challenges; linear and non-linear assets, typically cables and stations. The asset management needs to incorporate methods from these two in order to reach a good solution. The lecture ends by indicating research challenges that has to be addressed in order to improve the asset management and to answer the question of the lecture on a more detailed level than: Quite likely.

The lecture will be held in English.

Purpose: The candidate's teaching skills will be assessed by an evaluation committee. The committee consists of:

  • Prof. Pontus Johnsson, chairman
  • Assoc. Prof. Juliette Soulard, teacher representative
  • Yuwa Chompoobutrgool, student representative
