Abbas’ main research efforts have been on ship hydromechanics (resistance, seakeeping and manoeuvring) by a focus on green ship design and implementation of emerging technologies/methods in hydrodynamic ship design. In one project, he is now working on conceptualization of application of digital twins in ship design process for both new built and retrofitting where physical assets might not exist. In another project, his team want to implement generative AI for efficient hull form design. At the moment, their focus is on the generation of a relevant database. In the third project, he is working on how digital twins can link ship design and manufacturing. Moreover, he has been working on features and characteristics of ship motion prediction methods in different design stages.
Finally, he has recently joined a European initiative under the COST Action “Decarbonising Waterborne Transportation (DeWaTra)” where he is a member of the management committee and working in two working groups focusing on hydrodynamic hull design for energy-efficient performance and renewable energy contributions to ship energy efficiency focusing on sailing technologies.
