There is a growing need to reduce emissions in the transport sector. To make transport into cities more sustainable, this project examines how the planning of urban freight logistics hubs can be improved to enable a shift of goods from road to rail. The development of urban freight logistics hubs is a complex task and a number of requirements must be met.

In the project, two tools has been developed, one focusing on feasibility and the other focusing on planning for the development of urban intermodal terminals. Both tools are designed to be used in different cities with similar cases. Through a learning platform, planners are able to access the tool and use it in their daily work. The tool focusing on feasibility provides urban planners and transport planners a method to assess the potential for an urban freight logistics hub in a specific area, taking into account aspects such as available railway infrastructure and land availability. The planning tool provides urban and transport planners a process model that identifies possible development paths as well as critical steps and gives recommendations on how they should be handled.
