About me

I am a PhD student researching policy and market mechanisms for carbon dioxide removal through bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS). I have a master’s degree in sustainable energy engineering and have professional experience in heavy industry in Sweden, namely the steel and pulp and paper industries.

Carbon dioxide removal from bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) is widely regarded as indispensable for counterbalancing residual emissions on the path to net-zero. However, BECCS potential is unevenly distributed across countries. For example, Sweden has a larger BECCS potential than required to meet its national net-zero target, while other countries have little or no domestic potential. International market mechanisms, such as Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, may enable cooperation to deploy BECCS where it is most feasible while contributing to mitigation targets elsewhere.

The aim of my research is to examine the potential role, establishment, and operationalization of market mechanisms for BECCS in the Nordic region. This includes:

· Mapping BECCS potential and opportunities for Nordic market cooperation

· Assessing institutional requirements for BECCS cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement in the Nordic countries

· Identifying and evaluating financing options for BECCS in terms of environmental integrity, including the role of voluntary carbon markets

· Investigating stakeholder perspectives and public acceptance of market-based cooperation for large-scale BECCS deployment
