Summary : Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have attracted significant attention in the last years both from academia and industry for the enormous impact that their introduction can have on economy and society. The benefits of CAVs range from safety improvements, reduced environmental impact, efficient utilization of the road infrastructure to a more competitive road freight transportation. One of the biggest challenges in CAV development is the comprehension of the environment and the anticipation of road user behaviors. In this proposal we refer to such abilities as situational awareness, and we consider how to automate CAVs under dynamically varying situational awareness degree. The objective of this research project is to analyse, model and formalize a shared situational awareness framework for the extended vehicle. This framework will allow to orchestrate the utilization of shared resources in complex and crowded environments and to define which kind of information each CAV and the infrastructure should share.
