Research interests

The expertise lies in the area of downstream processing, especially on different primary recovery operations, their integration upstream and downstream, and their scale-up. Techniques of particular interest have been aqueous two-phase extraction and expanded bed adsorption. To change and control solubility and partition behaviour of proteins, gene technology has been used to alter their structure and surface properties. In connection to this the effect on protein proteolysis has been studied. Physical chemical properties of cell surfaces and their surface adsorption are being studied to increase the knowledge regarding the fouling of chromatography adsorbents and filtration membranes.

The focus of the research today is on the processing and fractionation of food waste streams for the recovery of organic compounds to be used in cultivation, biochemical and chemical processes with the aim to increase the value of waste.

Andres Veide is managing the pilot plant at KTH School of Biotechnology. The facility is used for courses, research and contract work with both national and international clients. The bioprocess group has vast experience with microbial production systems, e.g. Escherichia coli and Pichia pastoris, with a cultivation capacity up to 600 L. Equipment is also available for further processing downstream for recovery and purification of target products.
