Matematik kan beskrivas som vetenskapen som, med hjälp av logik, undersöker egenskaper och mönster av abstrakta strukturer. Historiskt har matematiken utvecklats i nära samspel med naturvetenskap och teknik. Institutionen består av fyra avdelningar.
