In an era defined by rapid technological advancement, the transportation sector has an opportunity to evolve and develop sustainable mobility systematically, driven by the convergence of data analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). These twin forces act as catalysts, driving innovation and redefining traditional paradigms in urban mobility from planning to operations, measuring and monitoring system dynamics, and understanding users’ travel patterns and behaviors.

The lecture part I demonstrates the applicability and value of the data and AI with examples of recent developments and applications:

a) Transit/railway data analytics for operation capacity management (monitoring, prediction, and forecasting);
b) Intelligent transport systems (innovative services, traffic management, information provision, computer vision); and
c) Multimodal mobility systems (service and operations optimization, personalized information and incentives).

Through a deconstructive lens, lecture part II discusses and shares thoughts on the role of data and AI in propelling intelligent transport, challenges, and ethical considerations. The gridlock rule for data/AI is that they cannot do everything but will transform industries. The foresight of data/AI use is to be ‘clear about the problem you solve’, not to be ‘the focus on the data/AI you use to solve it’.
