Within Data science and Applied Artificial Intelligence, methods and technology for collecting, organising and analysing data for generating new knowledge are developed. We focus on the two latter aspects; systems for large-scale distributed machine learning, algorithms for enabling trust in machine learning models through interpretability and statistical guarantees, and analysis of complex data, such as sequences and graphs. The research is applied in several different domains, including health-care and medicine, drug discovery, climate research, predictive maintenance and social networks. The department has internationally competitive competence in the areas of conformal prediction and interpretable machine learning and extensive presence in editorial boards and programme committees in several of the most prominent venues in the area.
