Interrupting High-Voltage DC current - more difficult than flipping a light switch
Seminar with Alexander Leijonhielm from Scibreak AB
The seminar will revolve around the need for HVDC in a green society, and present how the solutions developed at Scibreak can facilitate this. I will also dive into the concept of our breaker and how it differentiates itself from more conventional products. I will also spend some time talking about my personal experience at Scibreak and some of the work and travels I have done as an engineer at Scibreak.
Time: Thu 2025-11-06 15.00 - 16.00
Location: Teknikringen 33
Speaker Bio:
My name is Alexander Leijonhielm and I am a development engineer working at the Swedish company Scibreak. At Scibreak, we design and manufacture ultra-fast mechanical circuit breaker for high-voltage DC (and AC!) applications.
Since 2023, we are a part of the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO), giving us much more possibility grow and develop breakers with a large international company backing us up. We are still a small and agile team of nine highly competent engineers with lots of experience at the heart of Scibreak.
Apart from developing breakers, we have and are still participating in various European projects. Currently we are taking part in the InterOPERA project - a collaboration between numerous companies like Hitachi Energy, Siemens Energy and General Electric (and many more!) working together to lay the groundwork for a multi-vendor multi-terminal HVDC grid in Europe.
My time at Scibreak started in the spring of 2024 when I conducted my Master's Thesis there, as a part of my education in Electrical Engineering and an M.Sc. In Electric Power Engineering at KTH. After my thesis, I joined the Scibreak team in the fall of 2024 as a development engineer. Working in such a small and highly competent team, I have had tons of opportunities to grow and learn many different things - everything from simulations and programming to electromechanical construction and circuit design.
