The artificial material with negative permittivity and permeability is called left-handed material. It has attracted extensive attention due to its unusual properties, such as backward wave propagation, negative refractive index, and anti doppler effect. The split-ring resonator is a common artificial structure used to construct left-handed materials. The effective relative permittivity and permeability of left-handed materials need to be obtained with high precision for practical applications. In this thesis, a split-ring resonator array is designed to achieve backward wave propagation around 13-14 GHz. The material parameter retrieval method based on a transmission matrix is applied to extract the permittivity and permeability. The limitation of the retrieval method in nonlinear artificial mediums is discussed, and possible solutions of improving the retrieval method are proposed.
