1877 – The institute is named “KTH”
In 1877, the Institute of Technology celebrated its 50th anniversary and was also given a completely new name: the Royal Institute of Technology.
In fifty years, the Institute of Technology had developed into a technical university and had become the country’s central institution for higher education in most areas of technology. The education was extended to four years and architecture was now added to the schools of mechanical engineering, chemistry, mining science and civil engineering.
The architecture education had previously belonged to the Academy of Fine Arts, but in 1877 architecture became a separate school at the Institute of Technology. Here two traditions met: art and technical science. At the same time, the connection to the Academy of Fine Arts remained. According to the new statutes, architecture students could continue their studies there after three years.
