This lecture outlines and presents key theoretical perspectives of sustainability transition studies in addressing the plethora of societal challenges that we face today and discusses what these viewpoints imply for planning and governance.

What do these studies focus on in terms of concepts, core dimensions and components, and understanding of transition or transformation processes and approaches? What do these different approaches imply for policy makers, urban planning and governance processes in a context that seeks transformative changes towards sustainability and to which extent that this would be feasible?
