Aims and Objectives of POR-BioSorb

POR-BioSorb, a collaboration of European Universities, SMEs, and Research Institutes, aims to revolutionize the use of bio-based, energy-saving and climate-friendly porous materials with high absorption capacity.

By using low-cost polymers from biomass and advanced green technologies developed in the consortium, this project will produce environmentally friendly alternatives to these materials that are currently based on petroleum plastics and energy-intensive production.

Expected impacts and results

POR-BioSorb will transform food waste into functional, plastic-free materials useful as disposable sanitary items and greenhouse gas remediation technologies with a strong focus on scalability and environmental validation. This approach aligns with circular economy principles and ensures safe disposal and degradation into harmless substances, marking a significant step towards sustainable practices. The project also opens for novel applications, proactively considering the best environmental biopolymer policies in a future Bio-Europe.

Planned approach and realisation

We will evaluate using raw materials from waste as new scalable structures in various applications responsible for high environmental pollution. The project is built from partners covering the entire value chain, including KTH (Project coordinator), IVL, BioExtrax and MedClair (Swedish Team), UCLM and CSIC (Spanish Team), and Tetis Biotechnology (Turkish Team). The PORBioSorb team plans to seek new intellectual property and research to implement sustainable solutions in current materials generating micro-plastics or relying on highly costly manufacturing techniques.
