Hillert Materials Modeling Colloquium series I: Impact of Mats Hillert upon thermodynamic modeling

In this first seminar in the colloquium series organized by the Hillert Materials Modeling Lab, we will meet Professor Mats Hillert, who has played a major role in the development of thermodynamic modelling, and after whom the lab is named.

Time: Tue 2022-03-22 15.00

In the first seminar in the Materials Modeling Colloquium Series, Mats Hillert will give a historical note including people that inspired him. As an example he will connect the Hultgren Lab with the Hillert Modeling Lab by telling the story about the personal interaction between Axel Hultgren and himself, a story that started already in the early 50s.

Mats will be introduced by Malin Selleby and she will give a brief personal note not only on his research but also his contributions to teaching thermodynamics as well as how he has fostered generations of researchers and teachers in his non-hierarchic way of being.

Malin Selleby and Mats Hillert.

Mats Hillert is professor emeritus at MSE. He became professor in Physical Metallurgy at KTH in 1961. Mats’ vision about how computers could be used in thermodynamic modeling lay the foundation for the Thermo-Calc software. He also formulated the “sublattice” model, now the Compound Energy Formalism, which is the corner stone in Calphad modelling.

Malin Selleby is professor in Computational thermodynamics at MSE. Mats was her PhD supervisor. She graduated in 1993 when Mats was already “retired”.
