Course contents
The course consists of 2 modules.
1. Research ethics
This module can be completed by
A. active participation in a workshop on the topic, organized on a regular basis by the department of mathematics, or
B. passing a relevant PhD-level course on research ethics, of at least 2hp. The eligibility of courses is decided by the examiner.
2. Sustainability and diversity, equity & inclusion
This module can be completed by
A. active participation in a workshop on the topic, organized on a regular basis by the department of mathematics or in collaboration with other actors, or
B. passing a relevant PhD-level course. The eligibility of courses is decided by the examiner.
Both sustainability and equity need to be covered.
Different modes of passing the individual modules are possible if advisor and examiner agree and if the student showed a measurable, substantial and relevant contribution.
Intended learning outcomes
After completing this course, students will have acquired knowledge and abilities to analyze and make judgments regarding the interaction between mathematics and the scientific community as well as society at large. Students will be conscious of research ethics and the role of mathematics in questions of sustainability and gender equality.

Based on recommendation from KTH’s coordinator for disabilities, the examiner will decide how to adapt an examination for students with documented disability.

The examiner keeps track of completion of the modules for each participant. The participant is required to send proof of completion of a module to the examiner in a timely manner.

There are three homework assignments included in the course.
Plan: We have an introductory meeting for all participants where the aim is to divide into groups of approximately five students. Each group member is tasked to pick a text/viewing, and to act as discussion leader in a group discussion about the text/viewing. Before the group meetings, the group members each send a short reflection on the material to the discussion leader. In the meeting the reflections are discussed. After the session, the discussion leader writes a short text on the reflections and hands it in to Canvas. The discussions should take around an hour, which means that 2–3 two hour sessions should be enough to cover all the material.
The choice of text/viewing should be related to sustainability, otherwise you can choose following your own preference what would be interesting for the group to read. Possible solutions are for instance to search relevant reports in the journals Science and Nature Sustainability where also reports related to mathematics can be found. Ethical approach
All members of a group are responsible for the group's work.
In any assessment, every student shall honestly disclose any help received and sources used.
In an oral assessment, every student shall be able to present and answer questions about the entire assignment and solution.
On the use of generative AI
Generative AI may be used as a complement to the literature references given to search for material. The use of generative AI should be stated in the reports.
The reflections and reports should be the student's own reflections, and they must be original work, created without use of generative AI.
