Plan Your Trip

The 34th Miller Conference on Radiation Chemistry will be held at Marholmen Hotell & Konferens, on Marholmen Island, just south of Norrtälje, Sweden. The venue is about 70 km north of Stockholm and is connected to the mainland by a bridge.

The conference runs from Sunday, June 6 to Friday June 11, 2027.

Arrival in Sweden

Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN) is the recommended airport. It has direct connections to most major European and intercontinental hubs and is approximately 55 km from the venue.

Stockholm Bromma (BMA) handles mainly domestic flights. Stockholm Skavsta (NYO) and Västerås (VST) are served by some low-cost carriers, but are considerably farther away, so we do not recommend them.

Conference Shuttle

We plan to organize a shuttle between Arlanda Airport and Marholmen on June 6th and again on June 11th. More information will be available soon.

Please Note: June 6th is Sweden’s National Day

June 6 is Sweden’s National Day and falls on a Sunday in 2027. Public transport, particularly regional buses to Norrtälje, is likely to run less frequently than on a weekday. If you are arriving on June 6 without using the shuttle, we recommend checking timetables in advance and allowing extra time for connections. Taxis and rental cars are unaffected.

From Arlanda Airport

By car (approx. 50-60 minutes)

Take the E18 towards Norrtälje, then follow signs to Kapellskär and Furusund, and then signs to Marholmen. Guests using the venue’s services can park free in designated areas, but they must register their car with the hotel. The full route description is on the Marholmen Website.

Car rental: All major companies (e.g. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt) have desks at Arlanda. We recommend booking in advance.

By public transport (approx. 2 hours or more)

Unfortunately, there is no direct connection from the airport to the venue, so you’ll need one or two changes:

  1. Arlanda to Norrtälje: A regional bus (UL line 806) runs from the airport to Åby vägskäl, where a change to bus 677 will then take you Norrtälje bus station. Departures can be infrequent. Alternatively, travel to central Stockholm first (see below).
  2. Norrtälje to Marholmen: Take bus 632 towards Yxan and get off at Marholmens vägskäl. From there it is about a 2 km walk to the venue. A taxi from Norrtälje is another option.

By taxi or transfer (approx. 50 minutes)

Taxis are available at Arlanda. As the fare for this distance is high, we recommend agreeing on a price or pre-booking.

From Stockholm

By car (approx. 60-75 mins)

Take the E18 north towards Norrtälje, as described above.

By public transport (approx. 1.5-2 hours)

  1. From Central Station, take the metro (redline) to Tekniska Högskolan; Östra Station where the busses depart is just outside of the metro station.
  2. Take bus 676 to Norrtälje bus station.
  3. Change to bus 632 towards Yxan and get off at Marholmens vägskäl.
  4. Walk about 2 km to the venue or take a taxi from Norrtälje.

From Arlanda, the Arlanda Express or a commuter train takes you to Stockholm Central Station, from which the metro continues to Tekniska Högskolan.

Tickets and Apps

Local public transport is operated by SL (Stockholm) and UL (Uppsala County, including Arlanda). Journeys can be planned and tickets purchased in the SL and UL apps or at sl.se and ul.se. Contactless bank cards and mobile payments are accepted on most SL services.

Practical Tips for Visiting Sweden

Money and Payments

Sweden’s currency is the Swedish krona (SEK). It is one of the most cashless countries in the world. Nearly every shop, restaurant, taxi, and bus accepts contactless cards and mobile payments (Visa and Mastercard are the most widely accepted), and some businesses do not accept cash at all.

Tipping is not expected. Service is included in prices, though rounding up for excellent service in a restaurant is appreciated.

Language

Swedes speak excellent English, and you will have no trouble getting by with English in shops, public transport, or restaurants.

Weather and What to Pack

Weather can change quickly, especially on the coast. While the conference is hosted during the best time of the year for Sweden, it can still be on the chilly side, especially at night. We suggest layers, a light waterproof jacket, and comfortable shoes if you plan to explore the island.

Good to Know

  • Nature: Sweden’s allemansträtten (“right of public access”) lets you walk freely in nature, so the surroundings of Marholem are lovely to explore. Please respect the environment and private gardens.
  • Recycling: Sweden takes recycling seriously. You’ll find separate bins for different materials.
